And I Thought Mine Was Small

RV people, RV… I thought my RV was small.

So we were parked back in our old hood “The Alley” today and I was out walking the dogs when I happened upon the teeniest tiniest Lilliputionist camper I have ever seen in my life. This thing made our rig look like The Plaza on wheels.

We trotted right on past and got about a half a block away and I couldn’t keep going. I just had to turn around and go back. I’d noticed the door was open when I passed and I was so so SO curious to see what it looked like on the inside – not to mention finding out what sort of folk could possibly live in something that small. My mind immediately conjured up visions of renegade Mongolian Cirque Du Soleil contortionists who must have escaped sometime after the Sunday afternoon matinee of Mystere and fled West seeking a better lives for themselves and their rubbery offspring.

That vision was quickly shattered as I came upon one of the owners inside. A middle-aged woman, clearly not Mongolian, not from Lilliput, and although possibly limber – I had serious doubts that she could lay on her belly whilst back-bending her feet up and over her head and balancing on a stick while pasty white chiseled Eastern Bloc men did flips behind, over, and around her. No, she was from New Mexico, not Vegas – out visiting her kids here in San Diego with her husband for Thanksgiving (Cirque Du Turque?)

They not only let me inside their tiny little rolling wonderland to take a look around but spent a solid 15 minutes telling me about all their systems, modifications, and “amenities” they had on board. It was really cool. I couldn’t believe that something so incredibly small could actually provide so much. I thought they were really gracious to let a total stranger walking down the street take a bunch of pictures and ask them all sorts of questions (i.e. “wow, do you guys have a toilet in that thing?” – THEY DID!!! see my malfocused iPhone pic below).

Yes indeed, that yellow bucket looking thing was their porta potty. Incroyable! (to be read with loud/thick French accent) They carried a little bin of sawdust that they put in there and they said it works amazing – “like kitty litter”.

They informed me that they usually camp at areas with facilities but said that in a pinch (no pun intended) it worked great. They were obviously proud (rightfully so) of all they’d done to make their little camper livable. It was really cool to see what could be done with so little space and like they said “it’s amazing to see how little you really need to live comfortably”.

I snapped pictures while they told me all about their SCAMP and then the dogs and I were on our way. I didn’t get their names but I’d like to thank them for the show and tell. Very cool (and inspiring)!

Tally ho…

Living Large,
Matt

P.S. Here’s a few of the pics I snapped of the inside of the SCAMP and it’s non-circus fleeing owners.
