Our stint in Dallas – ok technically Allen – has come to an end and we’ve moved on down the road (currently sitting in a laundromat in Santa Fe, NM) but had to recap a few of our “adventures” in the big D.

Adventure #1 was Dallas Day on the scooter. Note: there’s not actually anything called Dallas Day to my knowledge but this is what I’m dubbing Bree and my first and only venture to downtown Dallas for sightseeing, touristyness, and show us what you got D-Town.

We found ourselves in the Deep Ellum part of town (which looks like it would be very cool/fun at night – in the day, meh, not so much – more like those parts of a city where they are trying to turn hood into good) Basically, like our neighborhood back in San Diego. Anyways, they had non-metered street parking so it was a big win for Dolly parking. Score. We offloaded Laurent (our dinghy, portable wheels, dope Yamaha Vino scooter used for covert ops inside city limits) and

Sidebar – dude just walked into the laundromat and says to friend “it’s snowing”. Bree and I look at each other, look outside. Confirmed. IT’S SNOWING! What the what!!! Operation Tally Crazy Ass Weather continues.

ok sorry, back to the recap… and we set off. They have this big ball tower thing (Reunion Tower) so we went and saw that…from the bottom, yay.

We were met by a sign saying “observation deck closed”. Sazzled. Evidently there was a restaurant up there but it didn’t open for 3 more hours. No thanks. So no amazing spinning overlooking view of Dallas and it’s surrounds for us. Boo. Anyways, we went to the tower dammit so it gets a check. Check. Drove down the street to Dealey Plaza and stood by the grassy knoll. Check. Took pictures of the big white “X” they painted on the street where JFK got his untimely capping that fateful Friday afternoon Nov 22, 1963. Check.

Investigation Note: Bree and I instantly discounted the Warren Commission’s finding after mere minutes of surveying the scene of claims that Lee Harvey Oswald did the deed from the 4th story window of the book depository building. No way. Not buying it. Enough on that.

Annnnnnnd, that was about it folks. Our entire touristy day of downtown took us all of about an hour. Trust me, we asked and asked, “what should we see/do in Dallas…what are the must visits, etc etc.” Nothing. I guess the nightlife and restaurants are out of this world and quite fantastic but we were just doing the day thing so didn’t get into any of that. Dallas. Check.

Adventure #2. Turns out my step brother Garrett lives in town. Who knew! Obviously we don’t really keep in touch but it was a great surprise. We hooked up for some great burgers at The Porch one night and he and his gf introduced us to the world of geocaching (gps scavenger/treasure hunting on a global and internet connected scale). We’d heard about it but never had done any so they took us out we tracked down 2 caches that were close to the restaurant.

Even better (and the real Adventure #2) was Garrett’s offer of a tour of his work (did you say tour? You knows that Bree and I loves us some tours peoples).

Garrett has served our country proudly in the Army for over 20 years so we got a super sweet personal tour of the facilities where he works – U.S. Army Reserve Seagoville. So cool. Thanks Garrett! Man I totally wish that I could talk about it but I can’t really write about any of the details unfortunately as it was all very hush hush, classified, black ops, eyes only sorta stuff. Oh I’m sure nobody reads this thing. Here’s some photos!

Adventure #3. Firsts in life seem to come slower as you get older but I had a first during our stay. We were visiting Bree’s close friends, the Tallals (see her post Dolly Does Dallas) and their daughters were gearing up for their annual talent show while we were there. Their oldest daughter Skylar was going to be singing a song so the weeks leading up the show I would play the guitar for her to practice singing at home. As it got closer to show time she asked if I’d play with her in the show rather than singing to the karaoke track. So yeah, who ever thought I’d be playing guitar in an elementary school talent show. Random and definitely a first. Backup guitar for elementary school talent show singer. Check.

It’s been a bit hard ever since actually as I can hardly walk through town anymore without being mobbed for autograph’s etc. but it’s the price we pay as artists I suppose.

So listen. That’s it. Clothes are done drying and it’s time to get the heck out of this laundromat and go eat some more of New Mexico’s famous green and red chilies. Until next time.

Tally ho…

snowshoeing,
Matt
